The name of the place Gulmarg is made up of two words – ‘Gul’ meaning flowers and ‘marg’ meaning meadow. It is a very beautiful spot. The forests are dense. The slopes of Gulmarg are lush green. It provides a very serene environment. The backdrop is formed by snow clad mountains. Skiing is an important activity.
Gulmarg is located in extreme north of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is found in the Baramulla district of the state. Srinagar is 57 kilometers away from Gulmarg. It is located at a height of 2730 meters. The Indo-Pakistan border is nearby.
Several films have been shot here owing to its mesmerizing beauty. Gulmarg was earlier known as “Gaurimarg”. It was given its new name by Sultan Yusuf Shah in the 16th century. Mughal Emperor Jahangir visited this place several times.
History Of Gulmarg
Gulmarg was called ˜Gaurimarg by the local shepherds, in honour of the fair and beautiful goddess Parvati. However, it was renamed as Gulmarg by Sultan Yusuf Shah of Chak Dynasty, who frequented the place with his dearest queen Habba Khatoon in the sixteenth century. 21 varieties of wild flowers were collected by the Mughal emperor Jahangir for his own garden in Gulmarg. Later, during the time of the colonial rule, Gulmarg became the summer retreat of the British officials to escape the heat of summers in North India. Post-independence, Gulmarg became a proud part of the Indian princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, many developments in the fields of tourism and sports have been initiated by the Indian Government here. Presently, Gulmarg is referred as one of the most beautiful parts of India.
Gondola Ride
It is counted amongst the most popular attractions of Gulmarg. It is actually a cable car ride, which is managed by Jammu and Kashmir State Cable Car Corporations. Divided in two sections, the ride takes you to Kongdori and from there to Apherwat. The ride passes over the pine forests and provides breathtaking views that can spell bind anyone easily.
Baba Reshi Shrine
Dedicated to a Muslim saint Baba Reshi, the attraction is a sacred mosque. Built in 1480, the shrine is visited by almost every traveller visiting Gulmarg. The shrine enjoys its popularity due to its age-old history and faith of the locals. Sprawled over a large area, this five century old shrine was made in Persian and Mughal style.
Alpathar Lake
Triangular shape, calm and beautiful ambience are the identities of this lake. Alpathar lake is a popular picnic spot. Snow-capped mountains in the backdrop make the aura more beautiful. The lake remains frozen in the winters. In summers, tourists can enjoy amazing views of bubbling water with floating ice pieces.

By Air :
The nearest airport to Gulmarg is the Srinagar Airport, located at a distance of just 56 Km from the city. One can avail the service of a prepaid cab or a shared taxi outside, to reach Gulmarg easily. The airport is well-connected to the major cities of India like Delhi, Amritsar and Mumbai via regular flights. The major airlines operating there are GoAir, Go Business, IndiGo, Air India and Jet Airways.
By Bus :
Gulmarg is well-connected with the regular bus service as well. It is connected with the frequent buses from the neighbouring towns of Kashmir like Sonamarg, Srinagar, Pahalgam and others. The regular, deluxe and luxury buses, operated by both private companies and the state government, are available.
By Train :
